Wagendrift Dam -EstcourtWagendrift Dam just outside Estcourt takes its name from a drift through the Bushmans River used by transport wagons on their way from Port Natal to the goldfields of the Witwatersrand, Wagendrift reserve near Estcourt is a 980 hectare protected area which incorperates Moor Park reserve and surrounds Wagendrift dam. It is a quiet, picturesque resort within easy reach of other Drakensberg holiday areas. |

On Makhabeni hill overlooking Moor Park is one of the oldest iron age sites in KwaZulu-Natal dating back to AD 1300 and on the southern side of the dam are large fossil beds with many fossilised trees lying exposed on the surface of the ground. Accommodation at Wagendrift DamThere are two caravan/camping grounds with hot and cold water. All sites have power points. A Youth Centre, which may be used for a variety of educational or environmental activities, has four 18-bedded dormitories. Attached to each is a flatlet with two beds for use by teachers or guides. The centre hall has a fully-equipped kitchen with refrigerator and cooking facilities. A television set and video machine are available. Visitors have to provide their own food and essentials.
